What Is Creativity?

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

Trying to get your arms around what creativity is can be like trying to corral the wind.

Part of that is good. Creativity isn’t a commodity we can trademark and own. It is not a scarce resource. By design, it is abundantly available for us all. But because the word has been used by so many in so many ways, clarity is needed for what I mean by the term.

Here’s my definition of creativity: Creativity is the act of partnering with God—through who we are and what we do—to bring something new into existence that changes people and the atmosphere for good.

We create with our Father. Because of who he is, we know who we are. Sons and daughters of a good Father who get to co-create with the Creator of everything. Bringing something new into existence isn’t easy. But we make it harder than it has to be when we exclude God from the process. Or when we don’t recognize Jesus for who he is:

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. (John 1:10 NIV)

For creators, the phrase “though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him” should hit especially hard.

We’ll look more at how our creativity first came untethered from God a bit later. We must first explore what is regularly coming against it—the Creativity Glitch.
