Naming the Problem

-An exclusive excerpt from Allen’s new book-

I made up the scenario with the doctor and patient (The Doctor Will See You), but the Creativity Glitch we face is quite real. It is the primary reason our creativity is compromised. Something within us is off, yet most of us remain completely unaware of it.

While I’m not a doctor, my experiences have uniquely qualified me to be at the forefront of a creative awakening that fuses God, story, and creativity. I’ve seen the struggles, explored the root causes, and learned a ton. Not in theory but through interacting with real people intent on thriving in their God-given abilities and interests.

When it comes to our creativity, I’m convinced our gifting is glitching. Though the problem is common, it was never meant to be our normal.

But a diagnosis is only helpful when we understand what it means. If we’re told we have Teringulanistitas Volandornia, it’s unclear whether we should breathe a sigh of relief or race through our bucket list.

The Creativity Glitch is a phrase I came up with to help reframe what tends to be a vague, and thus unaddressed, hindrance to our creative pursuits.

Naming the problem is the first step to solving it. But now let’s unpack it. We’ll next look at the words “Creativity” and “Glitch” separately. Then, we’ll put them together to understand why a fictional doctor’s diagnosis matters for our real-time creativity.
