Your Dreams Are Too Small
There’s a popular belief in creative circles that “we can do whatever we dream.” The sentiment sounds appealing but it’s actually a self-focused statement that leaves God completely out of the process. Plus it aims too low…because our dreams are too small.
We can’t do something just because we dream it. But we can do everything God created us to do…if we’ll pursue it with him! That’s why he invites us into pursuits that are beyond us, for us, and never up to us. That may sound counterintuitive, so let’s look at each of these three aspects in greater detail.
First, what God invites you into is beyond you. Listen to the words of God in the book of Jeremiah: Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come. (Jeremiah 33:3 NLT)
I hope that’s encouraging. Because where we are limited, God is limitless. We can do what’s within our reach in our own strength. But with God, we step into a realm where our creations transcend us.
Second, what God invites us into is for us. It isn’t generic, it’s personal. What God invites you into is uniquely for you. The adventure should fit like it was made for you…because it was.
Third, what God invites you into is never up to you. He will see through what he has given you to do. In his time. In his way. The process and outcome likely won’t look like you thought it would. It will be even better.
Without God, our best efforts will fall short. But what is done in union with God has the power to transcend our biggest dreams and ripple far beyond us and this moment in time.
